Sanitation Workers Celebrate at Azad Maidan Following Government Assurances

Mumbai / Ramesh Autade

The protest organized by the Municipal Mazdoor Union—staged at 'Varsha,' the Chief Minister's official residence, to press for the demand for ownership housing for sanitation workers of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation—has proven successful. Following assurances provided by the government, scenes of jubilation among the sanitation workers were witnessed at Azad Maidan.

Under the leadership of Ashok Jadhav, President of the Municipal Mazdoor Union, thousands of sanitation workers, accompanied by their families, had marched to the Chief Minister's residence. During the discussions held on this occasion, the government gave an assurance that a concrete decision regarding the housing issue of the sanitation workers would be taken very soon. Indications were given that justice would be delivered to the workers through the effective implementation of the Government Resolution (GR).

Ashok Jadhav clarified, "Placing our trust in the government, we are temporarily suspending our protest. However, if the government fails to honor its word, a more intense agitation will be launched." Jadhav issued this stern warning.
